On World Mental Health Day on 10 Oct. 2019, corporate members of Shared Value Project Hong Kong (SVPHK) announced a collective pledge to improve mental well-being in their workplaces and reduce stigma on mental health topics in Hong Kong. Pledging members include Accenture, AIA Hong Kong, AXA, Barclays, EY, Nestlé, Tricor Group and The Executive Centre, representing prominent businesses in Hong Kong from diverse industries and with large workforces and customer bases.

These companies committed to the SVPHK Corporate Community Mental Well-Being Pledge – all at the executive level – and will each start taking action in 2019 on at least three of the five best practice principles below:

  • Explore ways to collect anonymised, measurable and objective data that can reflect their organisation’s current state of mental well-being and resource effectiveness, while protecting employee confidentiality.
  • Raise awareness of mental well-being topics and resources available in and out of work.
  • Ensure and signpost policies that support a mental well-being-friendly environment.
  • Provide training to equip line managers and peer ambassadors to detect signs of risk, hold conversations on mental well-being and direct people to resources in a caring, confidential manner.
  • Promote activities beneficial to employees’ mental well-being proportionately to other wellness activities.

In SVPHK’s process of aligning with best practices in corporate wellness and mental health promotion, the Pledge was endorsed in early 2019 by Dr. Paul Wai-Ching Wong, Registered Clinical Psychologist, Associate Professor of the Department of Social Work and Social Administration, The University of Hong Kong, and National Representative (Hong Kong) of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (2010-2015).
